Nearly fifty scientific studies have consistently demonstrated that a sufficient-sized group of participants in Maharishis Transcendental Meditation and TM-Sidhi Programme create an influence of coherence and integration in the whole society, known as the Maharishi Effect.
These research studies, published in major research journals in the behavioural and social sciences, have used the most rigourous research methods and statistical procedures available in the social sciences.
The Maharishi Effect in society is parallel to the Meissner Effect in Physicsan influence of internal coherence is created in society, on the basis of which the society becomes invulnerable to disordering influences and creates an influence of harmony that extends beyond its borders.
The following are sample findings of research on the Maharishi Effect that demonstrate this influence within the nation and outside its borders:

Studies on the Maharishi Effect repeatedly demonstrate that the rate of civil crime and violence within society drops significantly immediately after a group of experts in Maharishis Transcendental Meditation and TM-Sidhi Programme, exceeding the square root of one per cent of the population, is brought together for twice-daily practice.
Research also shows that during periods in which the number of experts in Maharishis TM-Sidhi Programme is sufficient to create the Maharishi Effect, economic indicators improve, as measured by such variables as reduced inflation and unemployment; and quality of life improves, as demonstrated by studies that combine many social variables into one overall quality of life index.
In 1978 Maharishi implemented a World Peace Project, in which 1,400 experts went to five trouble-spot regions (Southeast Asia, Middle East, Iran, Zimbabwe [then Rhodesia], and Nicaragua) to reduce violence through collective practice of the TM-Sidhi Programme. An extensive analysis of international relations and conflict data from an independent research group (the Conflict and Peace Data Bank of the University of Maryland) showed that during the three months of the project there was a significant reduction of hostile acts and increase in cooperative events in these trouble spots. A similar significant improvement was also found worldwide, since these were the main locations of regional and international conflict at the time.
Research studies have also repeatedly confirmed the Global Maharishi Effect. During periods of ten days to three weeks in which the number of TM-Sidhi Programme Yogic Flyers gathered together approached or exceeded the square root of one per cent of the worlds populationabout 7,000 peoplethere was an immediate improvement in global social trends, including improved international relations and reduced incidence of terrorism.
